The University of Belize is excited about the energized refocus of the Associate Degree in Sustainable Agriculture. Major emphasis is hands-on experience and the inclusion of a stronger managerial component in addition to the acedemic background will help to produce graduates that contribute to agriculture, one of the pillars of the Belizean economy. The new program is run through the Faculty of Science and Technology. The Dean is Dr. Thippi Thaigaranjan, the Chair is Mrs. Carol August; Mr. Armando Cowo is the agronomist; Mr. F. Trinidad Mendez and several adjunct lecturer contribute to program delivery. The Development Unit on Central Farm is headed by Mr. Romaldo Lewis, Production Manger, who is assisted by his cadre of technicians and labour force (University of Belize, 2009).
What is Sustainable Agriculture?
Sustainable Agriculture:
1. Produces abundant food without depleting the earth's resources or polluting its environment.
2. follows the principle of nature to develop systems for raising crops and livestock that are, like nature, self-sustaining.
3. Is the agirculture of social values, one whos success is indistinguishable from the vibrant rural communities, rich lives for families on the farms, and wholesome food for everyone (http://attra.ncat.org).
