Also
noted as a trade center, Altun Ha is only seven miles from the sea, and
is surrounded by primary broadleaf rainforest. About an hour’s drive
away from the city, in the Belize District, along quaint country roads,
this site capture world attention when Dr. David Pendergast of the Royal
Ontario Museum discovered the now famous 9 ½ lb. Jade head of the
Sun God, KINICH AHAU, in the tomb of the masonry altars, Three plazas
and thirteen structures mark the epicentre of this important ceremonial
site. Prepared stone steps allow the visitor to climb top the top of three
of the main temples on the site, and view the countryside.
