Altun Ha - "Water of the Rock" Altun Ha is located in the north central part of BelizeDistrict on the old Northen Highway, 31 miles from Belize City . Altun Ha contains structure B-4 ( Temple of the Masonry Altars), the tallest, best preserved structure as the site and the place where one of the largest carved jades in the Maya wolrd was found. Altun Ha was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period, as well as a vital trading center that linked the Caribbean shores with other Maya centers in the interior. Altun Ha consists of two main plazas with some thirteen temples and residential structures in a pleasant park-like atmosphere. Many tombs discover dusing extensive excavations and restoratios of Altun Ha, from 1964-1978. Burial goods included hundreds of jade artifacts and green obsidian blades, some traceable directly to Teotihuacan in central Mexico . An unusual feature at Altun Ha is the absence of carved stelae. The "Jade Head", representing the Sun God, Kinich Ahau, was the most significant find during Dr. David Pendergast's excavations of Altun Ha. At approximately six inches high and weighing nine and three-quarter pounds, it is still to this day the largest carved jade object in the whole May area.
